We were saddened to learn of the passing of Master Anthony Lloyd (The Rt Hon The Lord Lloyd of Berwick DL), an Honorary Life Fellow of Cumberland Lodge.

Our former Principal, Alastair Niven, and former Chief Executive, Canon Dr Ed Newell, paid the following tribute to Master Lloyd:

“Tony Lloyd had a long association with Cumberland Lodge, and was one of several prominent figures from the legal world who have supported the Lodge with great energy and distinction over the years. In Tony’s case, this was as a trustee in the 1980s and 90s, during which time he helped steer the Board through some difficult situations where his sharp legal mind and deep humanity proved invaluable.

Tony and his wife Jane became actively involved in supporting the Lodge’s work more broadly, which continued after Tony stepped down from the Board. This included being a generous donor, with a particular focus on helping young people. In recognition of his long-term service and support, Tony was made an Honorary Life Fellow of Cumberland Lodge in 2015. At the dinner to celebrate his Fellowship, Tony regaled those attending with stories of his youthful athletic career, including his rivalry with another former Trustee of Cumberland Lodge – Sir Roger Bannister.

Tony and Jane’s love of the arts was also reflected in their association with Cumberland Lodge, as attendees at numerous cultural events. Until poor health stopped them from travelling, they were regular participants at the annual New Year Shakespeare Retreat – and would enthusiastically perform a scene from a Shakespeare play or something else suitable for the occasion.

Tony brought to Cumberland Lodge not only great wisdom, but warmth and a sense of fun, and a deep commitment to its work and mission. Many young people have benefitted from Tony’s involvement with Cumberland Lodge, and many more enjoyed his excellent company, which is greatly missed. In remembering Tony with gratitude and affection, and in giving thanks for a long life well lived, we extend our deepest sympathies to Jane and other members of the family.”
