Cumberland Lodge is a charitable foundation dedicated to the development of ethical leadership skills. That underpins everything we do. The majority of our programme work consists of retreats and courses aimed at young people to prompt them – the leaders of tomorrow – to explore and discuss what a more just and inclusive society might look like. Our visitors are encouraged to argue and disagree, but to disagree effectively. In their workshops, sessions, and discussions, they are supported to reflect on the moral, cultural, and generational issues facing the world.
Our programme team provides a range of workshops, conferences, and training courses to young people from around the UK, all to explore and develop different aspects of ethical leadership and cultural discussion.
These topics get to the heart of what leadership is all about – the personal qualities that inspire others to willingly follow. People will engage with, trust, and follow leaders who demonstrate open-mindedness, clarity, integrity, morality and cultural and generational understanding. This is how to get a group of people to work towards shared goals, which is the purpose of leadership in any setting.
This means that Cumberland Lodge is an ideal location for hosting a leadership retreat for your own business or organisation. While we do not provide ‘ready to go’ events for private or corporate clients, our team can offer advice on what has worked well for guests with similar requirements in the past and which of our spaces and facilities will best suit your retreat. We’re also happy to discuss any leadership retreat ideas you have and will help to support them wherever we can.
The perfect place for leadership retreats
Leadership retreats usually have two broad goals. The first is to develop the leadership skills and abilities of your people, especially those already in leadership positions or hoping to be in one during their careers. The second is to give leaders in your business or organisation some time away from their normal schedules and duties. This can make them more effective, stimulate fresh thinking and foster closer bonds.
Whatever balance between these two strands – development and renewal – you’re looking to achieve, Cumberland Lodge is the perfect place. Not only is our history and activity as an organisation tailored to developing leadership and interaction, but so is our location. Our namesake home is a 17th-century country house (formerly a royal residence) in the heart of Windsor Great Park – over 5,000 acres of outdoor space to explore or simply enjoy looking at. This provides a tranquil and secluded space that is perfect for getting away from the demands of everyday life and focusing on the matters and people at hand. Yet we’re just 20 minutes from London Heathrow Airport, 15 minutes from regular train services via Waterloo station in the heart of London and a short drive from three major motorways – the M25, M4 and M3. So wherever in the country (or the world) your people are, they can reach Cumberland Lodge easily.
A space for everyone
Our grounds – including a garden seminar space – offer plenty of scope for outdoor activities and exercise, both as structured tasks and for socialisation and relaxation. Indoors, we have a wide range of conference and meeting rooms to suit groups of all sizes, whether for whole-team meetings, dividing your people into task groups or a small informal breakout space. We have accommodation and catering on-site, including a self-contained detached house that sleeps seven and has three meeting rooms of its own.
At Cumberland Lodge we’re very keen on fostering interpersonal connection and dialogue, so we adopt a ‘low tech’ approach that encourages guests to put away their devices and start conversations. But our facilities are fitted with all the digital and audio-visual equipment you will need for presentations and other media.
