All of us at Cumberland Lodge were deeply saddened to hear of the death of our Visitor, Sir John Laws, on 5 April.
Sir John, who had a distinguished legal and academic career, served as our Visitor from 2003 until his death.
As well as having this formal role he was, together with his late wife Sophie, a great supporter of Cumberland Lodge and its work. Over the years, Sir John attended and contributed to many of our events, including more recently holding a seminar with our Fellows.
We will greatly miss not only his intellectual contributions to our work, but his friendship, deep warmth and humanity.
Our thoughts are with his daughter and wider family, particularly at this difficult time of social isolation.
